Conducting Termination Conversations

Termination conversations are among the most difficult leadership tasks. Uncertainty, evasiveness, or a lack of respect can cause the conversation to escalate and create legal risks. Conducted professionally and empathetically, however, conflicts can be avoided and the employee's dignity preserved.

Scenario

In this training, you will practice communicating terminations respectfully and clearly. Your counterpart initially reacts emotionally – with anger, disappointment, or grief. As long as you appear uncertain or evasive, emotions intensify. Only when you deliver the message unambiguously, respectfully, and transparently does your counterpart calm down and accept the further process.

Learnings

  • Communicate terminations clearly and in a legally sound manner
  • Remain respectful and empathetic even when delivering difficult news
  • Handle emotions professionally
  • Explain important procedural details correctly
  • Close the conversation in a structured and orderly way
